Our Values

Sustainability.
Aging in Community.
LGBT Issues.

Sustainability

Creating community to live lighter on our Earth.
  • Energy costs are reduced with cohousing’s environmentally friendly structures, smaller sized dwellings, smart design, and shared walls.
  • Green materials and passive and active energy design are included as much as is practical and affordable.
  • Our homes are clustered to preserve as much green space as possible for gardening and quiet enjoyment of nature.
  • Cohousers share many resources such as tools, exercise equipment, sewing machines, and small kitchen appliances.
  • Cohousing residents are said to reduce driving by 25% as neighbors share rides.
  • Xeriscaping with native plants reduces water usage. Other sustainable practices include recycling, composting, and rainwater collection.

Aging in Community

Aging in community affords opportunities to learn new skills and to pursue our passions.
  • Active involvement in community is an important factor in emotional, mental, and physical well-being.
  • Most adults wish to stay in their homes as long as possible. Research indicates cohousers are staying in their homes up to ten years longer than the average American.
  • We are empowered by choosing community before a crisis occurs.
  • The accessible physical design and the layout of our community promotes frequent and spontaneous interactions.
  • Elders are embraced by the community reducing isolation and loneliness.
  • “Good neighbors” offer assistance as they are willing and able.
  • Neighbors can help arrange for other services to be provided when needed.
  • There are opportunities for economies of scale with health care providers assisting multiple individuals in one visit.
  • We welcome those who want to choose now where, and with whom, they will live.

LGBT Issues

Creating community for LGBTs, straight friends, and allies.
  • SAGE’s “Out & Visible” survey shows that many older LGBTs go back into the closet for fear of discrimination in healthcare and nursing homes.
  • Many LGBTs have no children or close family, so it’s up to us to support each other through the aging process.
  • There is comfort and safety in living among those who share similar life experiences.
  • We welcome our friends and allies who have witnessed and supported our journeys.
